La produzione è stata sviluppata dal team di Santa Monica Studio ed è stata rilasciata da Sony Interactive Entertainment. Tra i brani Blood Upon the Snow con Hozier e Bear McCreary e la collaborazione con Eivør Pálsdóttir cantautrice e attrice dalle isole Faroe.
La trama del videogioco God of War Ragnarök è stata ambientata qualche anno dopo gli eventi della parte precedente della serie. Il titolo Ragnarok, ovvero la grande battaglia tra divinità e giganti norreni, che porterà alla fine del mondo, si avvicina rapidamente.
Ciò è dimostrato dal fatto che il precedente Grande Inverno (Fimbulvinter) ha già raggiunto Midgard. Per evitare l’inevitabile tragedia che senza dubbio sarà loro causata dai successivi scontri con gli Asami, Kratos vuole a tutti i costi mantenere Atreus al sicuro.
L’autore della colonna sonora è Bear McCreary musicista e compositore americano noto principalmente per la musica da film, allievo del famoso maestro di musica da film, Elmer Bernstein.
Bear McCreary è l’autore dell’ambientazione musicale per la serie Outlander e le 4 serie della versione rinnovata della serie Battlestar Galactica. È anche il compositore delle musiche della serie Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles e delle serie Caprica, The Walking Dead, Constantine e Pirates, oltre a film come The Boy, Step Up 3-D, Road of No Return 2 , Last Stand, Last Stand, Rest Stop: Don’t Look Back e Europa Report.
